Tours
Spanish Peaks Cycling Club members have hosted awesome cycling tours for the last 4 years:
Sue & Scott hosted the Colorado Mineral Belt Tour in June 2007 -- our best trip ever! This 1,100-mile 15-day road bike tour with 28 of our closest friends covered 30 of Colorado's finest passes and climbs, including Left Hand Canyon, Trail Ridge Road, Berthod Pass, Loveland Pass, Vail Pass, Battle Mountain, Tennesse Pass, Monarch Pass (or Cottonwood -beware the mag chloride!), Nine-Mile Hill, Powderhorn, Slumgullion, Spring Creek Pass, Wolf Creek Pass, KOA Hill, Coal Bank Pass, Mola Pass, Red Mountain Pass, Black Mesa Road, McClure Pass, Independence Pass, Climax, Swan Mountain, Loveland Pass, and Mt Evans. Whooooeeee! We had fun!
Sue & Scott hosted Mountain Madness in June 2005, an exhilarating 1,200 mile, 14-day road bike tour over 21 passes and peaks in the Colorado high country.
Sue & Scott also hosted Climbs From Hell in 2003, a 9-day ride with 25 cyclists covering 830 miles of classic Colorado terrain with 58,000 ft of climbing.
Denny Patterson hosted Cumbre a Cumbre in August 2004, when 11 cyclists pedalled the peaks of northern New Mexico. Denny hosted a Fall 2005 "Bicycle Adventure" in the Texas Hill Country which was great fun.
Tours are non-profit and open to SPC members and other cyclists by invitation.
Weekly Club Rides
Club rides in 2009 will be impromptu rides by e-mail invitation. Join the cycling club to receive news of local rides, or to invite others to join you on a local road some fine morning.
Tips for Local Riding
- Ride road bike loops at Lathrop State Park (2.8 miles per loop) on windy days
- Be gentle on mountain bike trails -- ride when trails are firm/frozen or firm/dry, but not when muddy/fragile
- Set small goals and slowly increase your cycling mileage.
- Ride consistently
Work out at La Veta's local gym: 2 Peak Fitness

Social Events
Thanks to everyone who turned out on a windy Sunday in February to clean up our adopted stretch of Highway 12: Sandy Borthick, MaryAnne DellaFera, Denny Patterson, Scott Effner, Sue Wyman and Jeanine Kenyon. Your service and commitment are very much appreciated! And thanks to Sandy for organizing the cleanup, and providing excellent baked goods and those lovely orange vests. Very stylish!
Stay tuned for notice of the next club meeting, potluck, or social event.
